Hot melt monolithic membrane

Hot melt monolithic membrane systems, have been used in the UK marked for some 40 years. Predominantly used in new build projects on both podium slabs / inverted roof installations.

Hot melt is a monolithic membrane is applied direct to a prepared structural deck to create a completely seamless roofing / waterproofing system.

Hot melt is a monolithic membrane system are described in two different categories: –

1st Generation hot melt systems

Component parts

• Quick dry bituminous primer

• First layer hot melt monolithic membrane

• Reinforcing fabric or filter fleece

• Second layer hot melt monolithic membrane

• Protection or access sheet

2nd Generation hot melt systems

component parts

• Quick dry bituminous primer

• Reinforcing mesh

• Hot melt monolithic membrane compound

• Protection or access sheet

Both 1st and 2nd generation hot melts, have a number of benefits over traditional roofing systems. most 1st and 2nd generation hot melt systems are BBA accredited to zero falls, this negating the need for expensive tapered insulations schemes. Hot melt systems are traditionally tough, seamless, flexible, self-healing, with incredibly fast in relation to installation speeds, hot melt systems predominantly will last the lifetime of the building.

Hot melt monolithic membrane systems are the preferred application for most new build flat roofing applications, where a concrete substructure is present. When incorporated into an inverted roof build up, with suitable inverted thermal insulation, concrete paving slabs and or decorative ballast it  gives a practical useable space that may not have been present before. Hot melt monolithic membranes can be used on terraces / podium slab gardens / and green (Sedum) roof application.

Hot melt monolithic membranes are predominantly used in new build installation, and don’t tend to be used in refurbishment projects.

Considerations must be taken as Hot melt monolithic membranes, can be logistically challenging due to cranage requirements to distribute all component parts, hot melt boilers to and from the roof etc.
